cancer screening At present the Rush Hill and Weston surgeries offer routine screening for breast cancer and cervical cancer. If you would like to discuss other cancers please do book an appointment with one of our doctors. Breast cancerCurrently all women between 50 and 70 are offered routine mammograms every 3 years. This a special X-ray of the breast that aims to pick up a cancerous growth at an early stage when treatment is most likely to result in a complete cure. We also encourage you to regularly examine your breasts. Please do see a doctor if you find any abnormalities. Cervical cancerThe cervix is the lower part or ‘neck’ of the womb. It presents most commonly in women in their 30’s and 40’s. If detected early, there is a good chance of a cure. The cervical smear aims to pick up abnormal or ‘dysplastic’ cells that may over years develop into cancer. The doctor or practice nurse will perform a gentle vaginal examination and with a special test kit scrape some superficial cells off the cervix. An abnormal smear does not mean that you have cancer in almost all cases. It takes approximately 6-8 weeks for the smear result to come back. If a smear is abnormal, you may need a repeat smear in 3-12 months. Treatment is needed in some cases. This is usually performed at the hospital and consists of the abnormal cells being removed.
